Turning the pile occasionally, adding water during dry spells, or chopping materials smaller will speed the process — but the whole point of cold composting is that you don’t have to.

You’ll know compost is finished when:

  • it looks dark and crumbly
  • you can’t recognize most original materials
  • it smells like fresh forest soil
  • worms are abundant
